Lotus 72
The lotus 72 was a formula one car designed by colin chapman and maurice philippe of lotus for the 1970 formula one season.
Lotus 72. Launched at the second race of the 1970 season the all new lotus 72 was the final step from the 1950s and 1960s cigar shape to the sharp look of the current single seaters. The radiator location was moved from the front of the car to two smaller ones mounted either side of the monocoque chassis. Pete lyons used to write entertaining and informative grand prix race reports for autosport so he is well qualified to tell the story of the lotus 72 which incredibly raced for six consecutive seasons from 1970 to 1975 with a posthumous championship for jochen rindt in 1970 and a second for emerson fittipaldi two years later. Ask any long time racing fan what car comes to mind when you say formula 1 and at least half of them will think of wedge shaped black and gold type 72.
The type 72 then should disgust me. The car that most defined the whole first half of 1970s was the lotus 72. The front mounted single radiator previously used was replaced by two smaller radiators mounted on either side of the cockpit.
