In 1762 pontiac enlisted support from practically every indian tribe from lake superior to the lower mississippi for a joint campaign to expel the british from the formerly french lands. Murphy bought into brush s idea and decided it should carry the name oakland as did his horse drawn vehicles. It later turned to the manufacture of automobiles auto parts buses and trucks. It followed the british victory in the french and indian war the north american front of the seven years war.
When the two met in 1906 brush showed murphy his design for a small two cylinder car that cadillac had rejected. Pontiac was a car brand owned made and sold by general motors introduced as a companion make for gm s more expensive line of oakland automobiles pontiac overtook oakland in popularity and supplanted its parent brand entirely by 1933. Sold in the united states canada and mexico by gm pontiac was advertised as the performance division of general motors from the 1960s onward. Named for chief pontiac of the ottawa tribe it was located on the saginaw trail and became an important wagon and carriage production centre in the 1880s.
